What kind of races are there in Marathon du Mont Blanc?

90km Epic Race

This infamous marathon is one of the most technically challenging trail races in France, with 6,220 metres of vertical terrain and an average altitude over 2000m. The 24-hour race begins early under a Mont Blanc sunrise, and leads runners across the Emosson dam in Switzerland, before taking a route along the magnificent Mer de Glace, beneath the Aiguille du Midi and finally, into the buzzing nighttime lights of Chamonix.

Maximum runners: 1,000 

KM Vertical

Running against the clock, this 1,000-metre alpine race promises to be a welcome challenge for any avid sport contestant. The 3.6km route is also open to the Junior category.

Starts: 5pm, 29 June

23km A Historical Race

With 6 hours in which to finish, this semi-autonomous trail leads participants along a varied terrain; with a maximum altitude of 1,665m and a descent of 621 metres. The versatile race is also open to the Espoir category.

Starts: 8am, 28 June

Maximum runners: 2000

Mont Blanc 10km

The perfect initiation into nature-trail runs, this 10km race is perfect for beginners and is open from the Cadet category and up. The route takes runners along the cross-country ski trails (please note that ski/walking poles are not permitted).

Starts: 10:30am, 28 June

Maximum runners: 2,000

Mont Blanc Mini Cross

A small selection of trails (800 metres, 2km and 3km) are open to the youngest contestants from 7- to 15-year-olds. The starting point for these 3 races is from the paragliding area, with the route taking young runners through scenic surroundings, including the Bois du Bouchet wood.

Duo étoilé

This unique nocturnal race offers the perfect opportunity for taking in the stars, whilst developing skills such as endurance and teamwork. Each competitor will have a running buddy to complete the all-weather 20km race with. With 6 hours on the clock, the timed race promises to be inspiring as it is challenging!

Starts: 7:30pm, 28 June

Maximum: 500 teams

Mont Blanc 42km

This semi-autonomous trail is open for the Espoire category and above. With a maximum time-limit of 9.5 hours to complete the race in and 2,780m ascents and 1,700m descents to tackle, this run is a great all-day challenge for any experienced runner.

Maximum runners: 2,300

3 full and 2 light refreshment points

Young Race Marathon

Dedicated to young runners, the short 15km race begins at La Tour and ends at Planpraz, with the finish line being the same as the 42km race. Distance categories include Junior, which is 18-19 years’ old and Hope Category, which is 20 to 22 years’ old.
