Lake Como, which is considered by many as the most beautiful Italian lake, offers an unbeatable vacation opportunity. The captivating charm of the lake lies in its spellbinding landscape with the mountains soaring up around the deep blue lake, the easy and relaxed pace of life in its towns, the numerous monuments, villas and chapels, cobbled alleys, and the beautiful cafes and artisan shops. But there are many more things that you can experience during your visit to Lake Como. The lake is surrounded by a variety of interesting destinations which can be covered on a day trip and are worth a visit.
1. Milan:
The historical city of Milan is only 40 minutes way from Lake Como by train. This culturally rich city is also the fashion capital of Italy and offers enviable shopping and dining opportunities. The Milan Cathedral, Italy’s biggest and the world’s 5th largest church is located here. Home to Da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper and many such iconic works of art and architecture, Milan is a destination you can’t miss at any cost. A day trip to Milan is bound to be an eventful affair with so many sites to visit and things to do.
2. Lugano:
What can be better than visiting Lake Como? Visiting another beautiful Italian lake! Only 45 minutes away from Lake Como, Lugano is a beautiful lake town on the peaceful shore of Lake Lugano across the border in Switzerland. Set against the backdrop of the mighty Lugano Prealps which offer wonderful opportunities for outdoor activities, a day trip to Lugano should include visiting the gardens, sacred places and villas, enjoying the scenery while sitting at a cafe and appreciating the landscape from the mountains.
3. St. Moritz:
Less than 2 hours away from Lake Como, St Moritz welcomes you for a total change of experience. Its Alpine landscape and lifestyle, beautiful lake, winter sports, and great dining facilities and shopping opportunities make for a perfect recipe for a day trip. St. Moritz has been quite a popular destination, especially among jet-setters and celebrities.
4. Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands:
The quest for beauty is a never ending saga. And that is why it is always a great idea to take a day trip to appreciate the scenic beauty of Lake Maggiore. Take a boat ride on the lake and visit the villas on the two adjacent Borromean islands: Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori. The unique vessel-like shape of the 17th century Borromeo Palace with its lovely Italian gardens is nothing less than a visual treat. The picturesque Isola dei Pescatori, on the other hand, is perfect for shopping and enjoying a luxurious lunch. Later, you can take a walk on the streets of Stresa and breathe in the unique charm of this part of Italy.
5. Bergamo:
Located at about 30 kilometers from Lake Como, Bergamo makes it to the list for its unique natural and manmade attractions. It is divided into two parts- the upper city and the lower city- which are connected by a funicular/cable car, roads, and footpaths. The upper city is located on a hilltop and surrounded by Venetian walls. It is full of art and medieval Renaissance and baroque architecture, and its location allow visitors to enjoy breathtaking views of the landscape and the southern plains. The lower city is dominated by modern infrastructure and provides a good contrast.
