Forte dei Marmi - not just a pretty beach

Forte Dei Marmi has been a tourist hotspot for the Italian rich and famous since the 18th century. Another famous market here is the Antique market in Piazza Dante which is hosted every second Saturday and Sunday of the month, with traders coming from all over Italy. Expect to find sculptures, art, collectibles, jewellery, furniture, books and artefacts. Besides the markets, there are also a number of boutique shops lined along the road adjacent to the beach where you can shop to your heart’s content. The roads are also lined with quaint pavement cafes where you can sip on a cup of your favourite coffee.  

Once you’re done shopping and you still have some time to spare, dive into the history of this town through its architecture. Forte Dei Marmi was built as a fortress to store marble and protect the area from outside attacks. The Fort, which is now a tourist attraction, is located in the city center and houses the local post office and the Museum of Satire and Caricatures. This museum is a unique experience and a must-do for everyone who visits Forte dei Marmi. Strolling around the museum you will find a collection of satires and caricatures from across the world. A video library and a multimedia archive  also belong to the museum. Other places worth visiting are the Sant’Ermete Church and the Villa Bertelli, which hosts many shows, concerts and exhibitions. The pier, which was originally used to load ships with marble is now an ideal place to admire the sunset.
