Ten splendid islands of volcanic origin off the coast of West Africa, whose natural heritage has only recently been discovered by international operators who have thus opened this archipelago to tourism. Cape Verde owes its name to the Portuguese, who named it after the Senegalese peninsula of Cap Verd opposite, the westernmost point of Africa. This archipelago was discovered in 1456 by Antonio and Bartolomeo da Noli, two Italian explorers in the service of Portugal, and it was immediately clear that the islands could be divided into two distinct groups based on the trade winds: the Ilhas do Barlovento to the North and the Ilhas do Sotavento to the South. Cape Verde is part of the so-called Macaronesia, a group of archipelagos that includes the Azores, Madeira, the Canaries and the Savage Islands. There is no original population of Cape Verde and this makes the country extremely multiethnic because the current inhabitants are of foreign origin. Windy, hilly and mostly arid, the Cape Verde islands fascinate with their almost lunar landscape and predominant silence. Some islands, however, stand out from the others thanks to their lush vegetation. But even if each island has its own peculiarities, what unites them are the beaches, all lapped by turquoise waters, stony expanses and, behind, volcanic landscapes. The island of Sal, with its beach called Santa Maria, is particularly popular and frequented by surfers. Such an essential environment finds its balance in the joie de vivre of the locals, famous for the typical “cabo” lifestyle. Here, music reigns supreme and marks every moment of the day.
